Parrallax: Build Your Alter Ego – Costume Design & Making Workshops

October 10, 2026 10:00 am — Tickets FREE
Arts & Cultural Exchange (ACE)

Have you always sketched characters in your notebooks? Do you want to make fashion with your own hands?

Arts & Cultural Exchange (ACE) presents Parrallax: Build Your Alter Ego, a free costume design and making workshop series led by production and set designer Al Joel and artist Luna Aquatica.

Guided by the principle of “DIY practice as radical expression of self”, participants will repurpose recycled materials into fantastical costumes, props and set pieces, exploring ideas of self and place. The program runs across October and ends with a professional photoshoot and an exhibition for family and friends.

ABOUT PARRALLAX

Parrallax runs in three parts:
  • Workshops: Build your world and characters through moodboards and sketching, then bring them to life with millinery basics, patterns, found objects and recycled materials. You can try painting, textiles, leatherwork, papier-mâché, foam carving and cardboard construction.
  • Photoshoot: Work with a professional make-up artist and photographer to style your looks, dress the set and light the scene, then star in your own shoot.
  • Exhibition: Build an exhibition together at ACE to share your creations with family and friends.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Luna Aquatica is a self-taught artist whose practice began as a resistance to conventional fashion. Their work explores how humans and nature exist together, often by transforming their own appearance into new characters. Luna also brings experience in workshop teaching and collective art making.
Al Joel is a production and set designer working across stage, screen, print and live events. Having learnt most of their skills from Sydney’s performance art, nightlife and festival communities, Al uses lo-fi craft techniques such as papier-mâché, decoupage and miniatures to create sets that feel handmade.
