Arts & Cultural Exchange presents an afternoon conversation with the nine writers behind Don’t Ask the Trees for Their Names: Stories of Leaving and Becoming, a powerful new collection edited by Oula Ghannoum and Loubna Haikal.

Bringing all contributors together on stage, this in-conversation event invites audiences into a shared dialogue about displacement, migration, memory and belonging. The writers will reflect on their journeys to Australia, the legacies of their homelands, and the ongoing process of forging new lives shaped by resilience, adaptation and community.

Facilitated by ACE Producer Yamane Fayed, the conversation will explore how lived experience challenges simplified ideas of identity, while offering space for complexity, joy and contradiction. Together, the Collective speaks to the personal and political realities of migration, examining Australian culture through deeply personal lenses and confronting global injustices that continue to shape everyday life.
Published by Gazebo Books, Don’t Ask the Trees for Their Names is a testament to both individuality and solidarity. The collection resists stereotypes, pushes back against sexism and racism, and amplifies voices too often marginalised or reduced to singular narratives.
