What is the project?

Cent$ Lab is a youth-led project exploring how young people from culturally and racially marginalised (CaRM) backgrounds in Western Sydney are experiencing economic hardship, particularly in today’s cost-of-living crisis.
Researchers Dr. Sherene Idriss, Dr. Genevieve Ritchie, Joelle Sassine and Dr. Joshua Kalemba are working with Arts & Cultural Exchange to understand how young people think and talk about money – who has it? Who doesn’t? What is our government doing to support young people juggling jobs and work?
Can they do things differently or better?

Why get involved?

This was a chance to share how you’re getting through economic challenges of housing, jobs, and rising costs of living. Reflecting with others about racism, migration and democracy.
This event offered free food and each participant received a $40 Prezee voucher.

What’s involved?

Talking about money and the economy can be somewhat boring, we get it.
In this 3 hour workshop, we played the Parramatta version of Monopoly. In groups of 4, each table made moves to see who came out on top and who got left behind. This event was a fun (and competitive) way to learn more about ‘economic literacy.
