Africa Film Fest Australia 2026 Returns To Sydney

September 3, 2026 6:00 pm

Stories of Memory, Resistance and Possibility

Africa Film Fest Australia returns to Sydney from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 September 2026, bringing four days of contemporary African cinema, filmmaker conversations and special events to the Sydney Opera House and Event Cinemas Parramatta.

Curated by Festival Co-Directors Mumbi Hinga and Safia Amadou, the 2026 program moves between public history and intimate lives. Audiences will encounter stories of apartheid, African independence, political power, music, romance, Black creative movements and the physical toll of racism, told by filmmakers from across Africa and its global diaspora.

This year’s program includes a race to recover more than 1,000 films documenting the birth of African independence, an Angelina Jolie-produced drama about Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr Denis Mukwege, a portrait of Arab music icon Umm Kulthum, and the story of the Harlem photographer whose images helped shape the Black Is Beautiful movement of the 1960s.

Africa Film Fest Australia is produced by Arts & Cultural Exchange (ACE) and supported by Screen NSW, Multicultural NSW, Weir Anderson Film, Sydney Opera House and AFTRS.
