This July, join us for A Western Sydney Book Club as James Jiang leads a conversation on Kontra, the poetry collection by Eunice Andrada.

About the Book

Kontra is Eunice Andrada’s award-winning third poetry collection, a bold and formally assured work of opposition, intimacy and dissent. Drawing on the figure of the kontrabida – the Filipina soap opera villainess often punished for wanting – Andrada’s poems move through desire, refusal, power and the possibilities of another future.

About Eunice Andrada

Eunice Andrada is a Filipina-Australian poet and educator, and the author of three poetry collections. Her debut collection, Flood Damages, won the Anne Elder Award and was shortlisted for several major literary prizes. Her second collection, TAKE CARE, was recognised across a number of national awards, including the Stella Prize and NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.

 

 

Kontra, her third poetry collection, won the 2026 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Poetry and was longlisted for the 2026 Stella Prize.

About James Jiang

James Jiang edits the Sydney Review of Books, which is based in the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University. He has been Assistant Editor at Griffith Review and Australian Book Review. Prior to becoming an editor, he was a literary studies academic specialising in modernist poetry.
James will lead a discussion exploring the key themes and ideas in Kontra.

A Western Sydney Book Club explores books by contemporary authors, with an initial focus on Australian writing.
Monthly conversations about books led by guest authors, for readers in and connected to Western Sydney.
