This August, join us for A Western Sydney Book Club as Hellai Gul leads a conversation on Plastic Budgie, the debut novel by Olivia De Zilva.

About the Book

Plastic Budgie is a brutally funny and inventive debut novel about family and identity, full of Y2K nostalgia, curses and glimpses of birds. As a semi-autobiographical, genre-defying and wonderfully crafted debut, de Zilva showcases how memories form us, in a way that is both unapologetially sentimental and eternally surprising.

Her work plunges her audience into the energies of a vivid self-expression, traversing themes of class and race with humour and astonishing grace.

About Hellai Gul

Hellai Gul is a poet, critic, and writer based in Sydney, on sovereign Gadigal and Darug Country. Their work can be found in Sydney Review of Books, Overland, Meanjin, Cordite,
Books+Publishing, the 2025 anthology Nothing Rhymes With Orange, and more.
Hellai will lead a discussion exploring the key themes and ideas in Plastic Budgie.

A Western Sydney Book Club explores books by contemporary authors, with an initial focus on Australian writing.
