About the Book

The Rot is a powerful poetry collection that looks at broken relationships, lost hopes, and serious injustices in the world. It speaks to the experience of growing up as a girl in a difficult modern time. The poems show a speaker who refuses to look away from the harm being done to Country, the violence happening on it, and the impact of colonialism both here and elsewhere.

About Evelyn Araluen

Evelyn Araluen is an acclaimed Indigenous Australian poet whose collections, Dropbear and The Rot, explore gender and contemporary issues with sharp wit and emotional depth.

 

This year her collection, The Rot, won the Victorian Premier Literary Award for the Indigenous writing category. Her work has also won the Nakata Brophy Prize for Young Indigenous Writers, the Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize, and a Wheeler Centre Next Chapter Fellowship.

About Luke Patterson

Facilitator Luke Patterson is a Gamilaroi poet, educator and musician living on Gadigal lands. His poetry has appeared in Cordite, Plumwood Mountain, Rabbit, Running Dog and The Suburban Review. Luke’s research and creative pursuits are grounded in extensive work with First Nations and other community-based organisations across Australia.

A Western Sydney Book Club explores books by contemporary authors, with an initial focus on Australian writing.
Monthly conversations about books led by guest authors, for readers in and connected to Western Sydney.
