Celebrating The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy

July 6, 2025 10:00 am

At Arts & Cultural Exchange (ACE), we believe in empowering the next generation of First Nations artists, leaders, and storytellers. This NAIDOC Week, we honour “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy” — a theme that reflects the power of youth, the guidance of Elders, and the future being forged through culture, creativity, and connection.

In 2025, our First Nations Program continues to grow — delivering music, dance, storytelling, digital arts, and cultural practice workshops across Western Sydney. From school-based residencies to studio sessions with established artists, we’ve created spaces where young Blak creatives can learn from Elders, connect with peers, and develop their craft.

Still Growing Workshops at Nepean High

We’ve been proud to host the Still Growing workshops at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School, led by the talented Biripi Worimi & Wiradjuri Artist Josh Sly (Wambuul Woodworks). Over the past 18 months, Josh has worked closely with the Deadly Arts First Nations group, running workshops in traditional dance, storytelling, toolmaking, and more.
This term, students have been handcrafting their own traditional dance garments — not just for performance, but as a powerful expression of cultural identity and pride. Through this process, they’re not only learning cultural practices, but truly living them — wearing their stories with strength, pride, and honour.

Deadly Beats & Bars with Nooky

We’re nearing the end of an incredible 10-week program at ACE in Parramatta, where First Nations rapper Nooky has been leading hands-on workshops in rap and beat production.
Over the past few months, participants have been developing their skills in:
  • Beatmaking & production
  • Stage presence & live performance
These intimate mentoring sessions have gone beyond the studio. Nooky has not only shared his knowledge and experience — he’s also created real opportunities for participants to grow. From inviting them to his shows to offering onstage performance slots, he’s helped young artists step into the spotlight.
Big thanks to Nooky for bringing his energy and expertise to the program — and to all the deadly participants who’ve shown up, levelled up, and brought their voices to the mic.

The Next Generation Is Already Here

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme reminds us: the next generation doesn’t start tomorrow. It’s happening now.
Through storytelling, mentorship, and creative expression, ACE is helping shape a future where First Nations culture continues to thrive — led by strong, visionary young people building on the legacy of those who came before.
